Republicans have lost a lot of ground across most of New England since the turn of the century, but the Maine 2nd Congressional district is the rare exception. After voting for Democrats in every presidential election from 1992 to 2012, it supported Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, and now leans 11% towards Republicans.
Democrat and former Marine Jared Golden knocked Congressman Bruce Poliquin out of the seat in 2018 with a razor-close 50.6% to 49.4% victory, and now Poliquin has decided to once again throw his hat into the ring and try to retake his seat. On paper, Poliquin has the edge, as most midterms are won by the party out of power. However, Golden will be tough to beat, as he’s successfully carved out an image as an independent-minded Democrat that will buck his party, in a similar vein as Maine Senator Susan Collins.
